Per Kirkeby - Still Life - Signed and numbered in pencil
Per Kirkeby, b. Copenhagen 1938, 2018
Kirkeby is considered the largest Danish post-war artist by Asger Jorn. In 1962 he joined the Ex-school, where he met Paul Gernes, Peter Louis-Jensen and Bjørn Nørgaard. In the 1960s Kirkeby is influenced by pop art and minimalism, and he fetches his motives from among others. magazines and comics, and use synthetic lacquers rather than classic oil colors. But in the mid-1970s he changed his expression, now he uses oil on canvas in an abstract expressionistic style. In the 1980s Kirkeby joined the group around Galerie Michael Werner in Cologne, which includes artists such as Baselitz, Penck, Lüpertz and Immendorff. It was the beginning of a great international career. Kirkeby is represented at numerous international museums. Museum of Modern Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; The Phillips Collection, Washington; Tate Gallery, London; Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes; Center Pompidou, Paris; Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, Turin; Modern Museum, Stockholm; Kiasma, Helsinki; Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen; Louisiana, Humlebæk and ARoS, Aarhus.
